St Mary’s is one of a group of churches built in the early nineteenth century to serve newly developed residential areas in London and other cities. Such churches are known as Waterloo Churches, because their construction was financed by a fund set up by the government in thanksgiving for the victorious end of twenty years of war against the French Revolution and Napoleon. The architect of St Mary’s was Sir Robert Smirke, best known for designing the British Museum. It was consecrated by the Bishop of London on 7th January 1824.
Almost 175 years later a major project began to refurbish St Mary’s. The remit was to preserve the existing structure and restore the church to its former Georgian splendour while making it more accessible and appropriate for present day use. The majority of these works were completed in June 2002.
The Main Auditorium has wooden floors, stained glass windows and 15 metre-high ceilings and can seat 500 theatre style or 300 cabaret style. This grand and spectacular space can hold more than 600 for a reception and to add to that, has an extensive balcony that can accommodate a further 250 people theatre style.
The lower floor (29m x 11m) has a modern feel, and is highly versatile with a moveable soundproof wall that can divide the area up and 2 small syndicate rooms.
St Mary’s is now a successful and unique London venue, ideal for its central location (just North of Oxford Street) combined with competitive and affordable rates, with the highlights being its prestigious, light and spacious auditorium with over 780 square metres of open space.
