The Vale Resort’s junior golf team is celebrating its latest success after taking joint first place at the Junior Team Golf Home Nations Inter Club Championships in Antequera, Spain on the 13th March 2013.
The team, captained by Callum Yorston (17) from Hensol and made up of Delon Hau (18) from Tonyrefail, Ryan Thomas (18) from Cardiff, Tim Harry (15) from Dinas Powys, Harrie Llewellyn (15) from Whitchurch, Mathew Rees (15) from Bridgend, Ollie Lloyd (17) from Miskin and Ollie Brown (14) from Peterson-super-Ely, went head-to-head with the best junior teams from across England and Wales.
A tense week of golf played in poor weather conditions resulted in a first place tie between the Vale Resort and St Pierre from Chepstow, the first time in the competition’s 19 year history that a Welsh team has made it to the final.
Clive Coombs, the Vale Resort’s golf operations manager, said: “Yet again, the junior team have done themselves and the Vale Resort proud. They played some brilliant golf and conducted themselves like true sports men and women throughout the competition.
“The fact that a Welsh team has never even made it to the final of this competition before, let alone win, shows that the investment the Vale Resort has put into nurturing up-and-coming golfing talent through our golf Academy is certainly paying off.
“We are also lucky to have dedicated people who have put many hours into working with the team, and some very generous sponsors without whom this trip would not have been possible.”
Speaking of the event, team captain Callum Yorston said: “I was honoured to be captain of such an inspiring team who gave their all in difficult conditions. Bringing the trophy home to Wales makes this one of the best weeks of our lives.”
The team is made up of players who have come through the Vale Resort’s Junior Golfing Academy, and has produced young golfing stars such as the European Amateur Championship Cup winner, Rhys Pugh. The Vale’s Junior Team is sponsored by the Principality Building Society, which is strongly committed to supporting grass roots sport in Wales.
As part of its commitment to supporting the golfing stars of the future, the Vale currently offers a special Junior Golfing Package. Open to young people aged between 8-18 years, it includes free access to the Vale’s Academy Coaching Scheme, a copy of the Academy’s coaching manual and over 50% off Junior Membership subscription fee for the first year.
